My training in sculpture I believe has given me a hands-on and research-driven interest in materials and processes. The provenance of the materials and equipment I use are of great importance to me. Following closely traditional recipes, mixing pigment with binder, the inks I work with have particular qualities.
Presence and concentration are both key to my work, reached through investing time in rehearsing each piece. First, as a dry gesture, over and over, committing the arm and hand movements to muscle memory. Then, the delicate papers I use absorb every fluid, gestural movement as I accept the brevity of a final, committed action. Marks made through gesture and the movements of my body are partners alongside obsessive repetitive processes, where the embodiment of mark making becomes a physical meditation that captures the moment.
