I found my artistic calling while observing an approaching storm over the Cornish coast more than 30 years ago! Since then, the focus of my paintings has become the sky, the horizon, space and how variations in light are so dramatically affected by changing weather conditions. The atmosphere is my subject; ‘atmospheric’ is how I want my paintings to appear.
I use pure, natural oil paints on fine Berge linen, wrapped around tulip wood box stretchers, to create a window through which the viewer can immerse themselves. Multi-layering creates a strong sense of depth, but also allows my paintings to change with fluctuations in light throughout the day. I do not instruct the viewer what I want them to see; rather I ask that they allow themselves to be embraced by the colours and the vibrancy. They can then decide for themselves what the image says to them.
